Showing off her newly-acquired assets in a black see-through and stratetically studded top, the former Destiny’s Child singer had all eyes on her as she belted out her dance hits to a club full of Sin City revelers.

Meanwhile, Kelly says she became so emotional as she recorded her latest single Rose Colored Glasses, that she caused her vocal chords to become swollen.

“The song is about relationships; the good, the bad and the ugly,” she explains. “It brought back a few memories. When I recorded it I cried so much my vocal chords got swollen.”

As for her upcoming new track called Haters? Kelly says she hopes it will bring a smile to people’s faces.

“It’s for all the miserable people out there,” she says, “to tell them not to make the rest of us feel miserable and to cheer up!”

Kelly releases her third album next month.

However, if not careful, a bad weave can make your look change for the worse. Follow this rundown (with tips from Kiyah) to keep your new tresses looking just as fierce as they did when you walked out of the salon.

1-2 WEEKS BEFORE THE SALON VISIT:

Give your hair a break. According to Kiyah, you should avoid chemical treatments and other weaves for at least one week prior. “A fresh base is always great to work from,” she says.

Find what you want. Go through magazines or blogs for inspiration. Think about how your weave will fit into your lifestyle.

Meet with your stylist to discuss your desired look. For best results, allow your stylist to prepare in advance, as certain hairstyles and colors work best with specific weave textures. For example, if you’re going on a tropical vacation, get a wet and wavy style to swim around in. “When you go [back to] work in a corporate environment, the hair can transition over easily to straight,” Kiyah says.

AT THE STYLIST’S CHAIR:

Plan your future hair appointments. “A typical hair weave usually lasts between one-and-a-half to three-and-a-half months,” says Kiyah. By creating a solid maintenance plan, you can avoid last-minute panic styles (like that half silky/half crazy ponytail that really isn’t fooling anyone!).

Make sure that your stylist cuts and styles your weave with a razor, not scissors. A razor cut flattens out the texture to give it a natural look. According to Kiyah, a razor will also prevent the tracks from showing because it cuts the weave more evenly.

1.5 WEEKS AFTER THE SALON VISIT:

Wash your mane every week and a half using the “Kiyah Tip”: “Use [antiseptic] with a bottle tip applicator to squeeze in between the tracks,” she says. With the antiseptic on your scalp, apply a cleansing (not moisturizing) shampoo and wash. For the antiseptic, try Sea Breeze Astringent for Skin & Scalp, $10.

Skip the conditioner on your weave; it weighs it down. “I put a little regular conditioner on the natural hair, like on top, or on the edges,” Kiyah says.

Instead of conditioner, use a detangler. After you apply the detangling leave-in conditioner, break your hair into sections, then run a paddle brush through the hair, which makes it more manageable. Kiyah likes the Unite Eurotherapy 7 Seconds Condition Leave-in Detangler ($20.95, howardjonessalon.com)

1-6 WEEKS AFTER THE SALON VISIT:

Keep your tracks tight. The texture, length and style of the weave determine how often you’ll have to tighten it. “Tighten it up when things begin to shift,” instructs Kiyah. “Make sure that your hair texture matches the weave texture.” It’s best to leave that part to the pros. “If you’re in the salon, your stylist is going to tell you exactly what to do.”

SPECIAL STYLING TIPS:

Kiyah doesn’t like anything too oily on curly styles. She recommends the Kinky-Curly line because it moisturizes without grease. For styling, use a blow dryer with a diffuser. “Lean over and put the hair right into it,” she says, then crunch the hair as it dries.

For straight styles, Kiyah recommends using minimal product for lasting results. An aerosol spray, such as Paul Mitchell Super Clean Spray ($15.50, amazon.com) locks in freshly styled hair. To prevent frizz, use a light hair serum with silicone, such as Simply Stylin’ Silk ($10, shop.simplystylinhair.com). One of Kiyah’s favorite hair products is the Tancho Tique Stick ($14, beautycollection.com), a wax-based hair pomade.”It’s really good for the edges and to blend the [natural] hair in with the extensions,” she says. But keep in mind that that the Tancho Tique should only be used on DRY, STRAIGHT hair!

From the pages of Coco & Creme.

Weaves get a bad rep for the damage they can cause. But if you properly care for your hair underneath, weaves can be a great way to add fullness and length, change up your look or give your natural hair a break from styling. Follow these simple steps and you’ll minimize damage and optimize growth!

1. If you can’t afford it, don’t wear it. Synthetic hair might seem cost-friendly but it can make your natural hair brittle and even irritate your scalp. Look out for brands that claim to be 100% human hair but are really mixed with synthetic fibers.

2. Condition! Condition! Condition! It’s crucial that you deep condition your hair before attaching a weave. Apply a product to damp hair then sit under a hooded dryer wearing a plastic cap for 20 minutes. No hooded dryer? No problem. Leave the conditioner in for 45 minutes to 1 hour with just the plastic cap. Then rinse.

3. Avoid glue-in weaves. Cornrows aren’t only for full-weaves and can look just as natural as glue-ins. Small and intricately placed braids can blend in seamlessly with loose natural strands.

4. If it hurts, get out of there! Tracks should be sewn in firmly but comfortably. You should not leave the salon in pain. Keep a weaving thread and needle handy at home for any tracks that come loose. It’s not worth losing your hair.

5. Add a net. Attaching a weaving net can relieve some of the tension. You can even have the tracks sewn onto the net instead of your actual hair. This makes getting to your scalp when washing easier and makes weave removal simple.

6. Wash it. Part your weave into four quadrants. Create loose knots and secure with clips to reduce tangling. Use a spray bottle with diluted shampoo and diluted conditioner to reduce buildup. Saturate each section then massage product into scalp and hair as you would your natural hair (using your fingertips, not nails and carefully maneuvering between tracks and under braids). When conditioning, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle. Rinse section by section, loosely wrapping back up in a knot when moving onto the next. When all product is removed, create four braids. Finally, sit under a hooded dryer so that scalp and hair can thoroughly dry.

7. Don’t use product. Oils, crèmes and hairsprays will weigh down your weave and cause build up which can lead to odors! Aerosol sprays can dry out the strands. If you invest in a quality weave, you won’t need to apply product between washes. If you have a curly weave, a dollop of leave in condition on the damp hair will control frizz.

8. Don’t use heat. Steer clear of curling and flat irons. Bantu knots or jumbo braids at night can create beautiful curls and waves in the morning. Just lightly finger-comb. The less you manipulate your weave, the less stress you’re applying to your real hair.

9. Oil your edges and scalp. Rosemary herb combined with an oil like jojoba or almond can condition hair and stimulate growth. Mix in a squirt bottle so that you can direct the oil to your scalp and avoid the contact with your weave.

10. Take a break. Giving your hair a rest from weaves doesn’t necessarily mean your locks have to go from long and curly to cropped and relaxed overnight. If you want to keep up one consistent look even in between weaves, try faux ponies or half-wigs. Your strands will thank you later!

From the pages of Billboard.com

After taking part in her first spiritual album — “Beyond,” a collection of Buddhist and Christian prayer and chanting that came out in September — Tina Turner predicts she’ll be exploring that path more.

“I wouldn’t say no [to it],” she tells Billboard.com, but adds, “I believe that it is my future, and I am waiting for that. I enjoy these projects, but it just brings me into a position, into the limelight, and I don’t want that for the moment. I will choose very carefully.”

Turner, 71, was approached to be part of “Beyond” by Regula Curti, a music and art therapist and singing teacher based in Zurich, Switzerland. Curti was already working with Tibetan mantra singer Dechan Shak-Dagsay on the project, which was “conceptually already finished” by the time Turner, who also resides in Switzerland, got involved.

“I was always told that a spiritual project will come one day,” says Turner, who was introduced to Buddhism and chanting in 1971 and converted in 1974. “So I answered to Regula, ‘I waited so long for that moment and that was the moment.’ So I happily accepted…The experience of singing prayers together allows us to deeply connect on a emotional level — a place of love and respect where worldly differences fade.”

Turner adds that she finds similarities between her spiritual and secular music, though it’s been 11 years since her last album of new pop songs.

“Rock singing is another inspiration for people,” explains Turner, who staged her Tina! 50th Anniversary Tour in 2008-09. “Rock songs inspire you to release whatever the frustrations, and help you to go on in life. Spiritual songs do it on another level…A lot of people left my last show with the same sense of spirituality. My show gave people the drive to go and to do in their lives what they want to do and make their lives the best, do the best they can in this world… That is the mail I receive. My rock shows did the same as what my spiritual music does now. It is about the right word and the right way to do it.”

And while she leaves the door open for another project along the lines of “Beyond,” Turner indicates that her rock days, particularly on the road, are likely behind her. “Everybody wants to know when you get to be a certain age about (if you are) retiring,” she notes, “and it’s something that you can’t put your finger on because you don’t really know. But something I do know is that such a tour I won’t do…The rock and the dancing and the style I lived before, I would say absolutely ‘no’ on that.”

From the pages of Hueknewit.

Not everyone’s blessed with thick strands of hair which is why weaves and wigs have become the norm, and in some cases an unfortunate crutch. What would you do if you had fine hair like the chanteuse Toni Braxton, who from her early years as a recording artist never had the fullness that she boasts as of late (with the help of a weave no doubt)? Would you treat your underlying issue and use some of the following products to bring some fullness to what nature blessed you with or add superficial fullness to give you a little extra confidence?

Folicure Moisturizing Conditioner ($6.39, sallybeauty.com) is part of line that was formulated to develop fuller, thicker hair for men and women. This particular moisturizing conditioner is the first everyday use, rinse-out Folicure conditioner. It leaves your fine, delicate hair smooth, shiny and full while it stimulates your scalp with a refreshing tingle.

Many of you have heard of the Bosley System for men’s hair loss, but there’s a line specifically made for women as well. Bosley’s Professional Strength Bos Defense Nourishing Shampoo for Normal to Fine Hair for Non Color Treated Hair ($18.99, haircarechoices.com) is a sulfate free cleanser helps to promote hair growth by removing buildup and toxins like D.H.T. (a male hormone that stops hair growth, in other words it stops hair growing from the roots) from the hair and scalp. This shampoo nourishes, strengthens and fortifies your hair follicles to result in thicker, fuller looking hair.

Marc Anthony’s Instantly Thick Hair Thickening Cream ($7.99, ulta.com) is a little different in it’s ability to thicken your hair. If you have what is typically called “wet & go” hair and you get blow outs then this may be the perfect product for you. This product is formulated with phytokeratin which wraps a secondary layer around each and every hairstrand. Also provides heat protection and shine. This heat activated cream is used after you shampoo and condition your hair. To use: Apply the cream from roots to ends on damp hair, the hair is thickened by the blow dry process. For added lift and hold, combine with other Instantly Thick™ styling products.

How to Get Really Shiny Hair

An Interview With Frédéric Fekkai from Allure.com

Frédéric Fekkai is the owner of six Frédéric Fekkai salons and the creator of the Fekkai hair products.

Gleaming hair is a sign of youth and vitality, so I cringe when I see a woman with lackluster hair—it ages her. Pollution, harsh chemicals, and heat styling can all turn hair dull, but a few extra steps will ensure your head shines.

• Start in the shower. Look for shine-enhancing shampoo and conditioner with ingredients like olive oil, jojoba, and rice proteins. Alternate these with your regular formulas to prevent buildup. Be wary of clarifying shampoos; they can deprive hair of much-needed moisture and even strip the dye off color-treated hair. After you shampoo, apply a conditioner evenly through the ends and rinse thoroughly. If your hair is color-treated, use a hair mask weekly to replenish moisture.

• Prep work. After towel-drying, apply either a glossing cream or shine serum with high levels of panthenol (provitamin B5). Glossing creams are lighter and have less silicone, so they’re more appropriate for women with fine to medium hair. Use a shine serum if you have frizzy or coarse hair or unruly curls. (Avoid saltwater sprays; they tend to leave a matte finish.) Massage a quarter-size dollop of the product evenly through your hair.

• Dry the right way. Place a round, natural-bristle brush under a three-inch section of hair. Start at the roots, and hold the dryer so the nozzle aims downward—never up against the shaft. Slide the brush down without twisting it, to seal the cuticle.

• Add a spritz. While your hair is still warm from the dryer, flip it upside down and mist the ends with a shine spray. This ensures you won’t get too much product near the roots. If you need a touch-up during the day, spritz some shine spray on your hands and run them lightly through your hair. Again, you don’t want to overdo it.

Raven Symone is a long way from Disney these days, flaunting her sexy vixeness to the umpth degree. Interviewed in this month’s Kontrol Magazine, Ms. Symone speaks candidly about her style, her growth and her unstoppable success.

She rocks some of the best in hair pieces and she’s made her love of weaves known, such as in Chris Rock’s Good Hair.

The singer-songwriter, actress, comedienne, dancer, producer, and model who is best known for her roles as Raven Baxter in That’s So Raven and her how-to video website called Raven-Symone Presents.

Sharing a double cover with The Game star Pooch Hall, she had much to say. The young actress that has now grown into a woman and been able to keep her head above water and not succumb to the ills of Hollywood is certainly a different change. She talks candidly about how she feels she has far more to grow and achieve. Even with all of her accolades she feels like she has not accomplished all the dreams she set out to do when she was fifteen. But she does admit she is happy with all the opportunities she has received and been a part of.

When asked who inspires her she tells the interviewer that anyone doing what they love and making a paycheck from it gets her kudos. After she is asked why she admires Janet Jackson she is simple with her praise that she finds Janet beautiful and that she has lasted so many years, which means a lot because that has kept her real. Raven will be soon returning to television to star on ABC’s Family multi-camera comedy pilot The Great State of Georgia.

Take a sneak peak at the behind the scenes video of the Kontrol shoot. She’s truly an amazing woman and one to watch.

There are few women who’s head we watch as closely as we do Beyonce Knowles. Rarely have we caught her with a bad hair day, and it goes without saying that she’s an awesome entertainer, but I think what I most admire about Beyonce is her amazing work ethic. She’s been as busy as ever, this month (11/30) releasing her I AM…World Tour Deluxe DVD/CD, which she directed.

Her man is equally as busy, just releasing his novel Decoded as the both of them fight off the rampid pregnancy rumors. For the record, she says she’s not (now).

Here is a glimpse of just how bust she’s been from an interview on ABC’s Dateline this week. Take note how fly your girl’s hair always seems to be, even in her “private” moments.

Featured article from Women Hair Loss Project

Insurance companies don’t cover the cost of wigs, also known as hair prosthesis, when hair loss is caused by anything other than chemotherapy. And even then, not all insurance companies cover the cost of the hair prosthesis for chemotherapy related hair loss. Lisa Fayed, the cancer guide from about.com writes “If your insurance company does cover the cost of wig, you may need your doctor to write a letter or prescription that includes information as to why you need the wig, noting that it is not for cosmetic purposes, but for your emotional well-being. Request that your doctor prescribe a “hair prosthesis or cranial hair prosthesis”, not just a “wig”. Insurance companies are very particular of wording, and most will not cover a “wig”, but will cover a “hair prosthesis”, even though they are the same thing.

Well the “emotional well being” reason is still applicable for whatever the reason the person is suffering with hair loss. My insurance company covers the cost of orthotics, those little plastic like shoe inserts that are custom ordered from the podiatrist. The cost of the orthotics at my podiatrist, $500. That would provide for a decent hair prosthesis for a hair loss suffer. I suffer much more from my hair loss than I ever did from my unbalanced feet alignment. My foot ailment never caused me any “emotional well being” distress, just a little discomfort and pain, but yet that is covered under my insurance plan. They also cover “psychological treatment” which many women end up needing due to the devastating effect hair loss has on a woman’s self image. The insurance companies should realize that they are being penny wise and dollar foolish. They are probably spending millions on psychological treatment sought by people suffering with hair loss, when if fact that number could be cut down dramatically if they simply offered coverage of the hair prosthesis.

Something to think about.

Back when I was working for a technology firm, I can recall sitting on a conference call as the other parties spoke diligently about the algorithm and the issues concerning the back-end systems. While I promise you, I was paying attention, I was distracted with a thought that popped in my head “hmm, my weave doesn’t itch anymore!” I was referring to my weave that was a good one week old, but had giving me hell with that dreaded new weave itch!

Here are suggestions I found featured in a posted article on Clutch!

‘Pat Your Weave, Ladies’: How to Fight the Itch

Tuesday Nov 9, 2010 – By Liane Membis

Yes. We’re all victims of it. We’ve been spotted in places where we thought no one was looking, combing through our tresses, patting furiously at the top of our heads, receiving sideway glances and mixed looks of confusion.

The plight of the itchy scalp is seriously a b-word.

The itch is experienced in a variety of ways. Sometimes it’s a tight weave that feels good for two days that sends our fingers on a wild and crazy roaming spree. Or it’s a harsh winter day that saps the living water right up out our roots.

But what really triggers that fiery feeling on the top of our heads?

One of the most common reasons for an itchy scalp is dandruff. It is a condition that is caused by the overgrowth of yeast on our scalp, which triggers inflammation at our roots and itching. The most noticeable downside of dandruff is flaking, or the peeling away of dry layers of the scalp.

Another reason, which is most attributed to weaves and braids, is the tight contraction of the skin and lack of moisture and fresh air. If your hair is pulled too tight during the braiding or weaving process, inflammation of hair follicles can develop. When hair is trapped under a net or mass of hair for days without moisture, the scalp gets ridiculously dry, creating a spread of that fiery itching feeling. Sweating or getting the hair wet without properly drying the scalp can cause mold or mildew to develop and create an itching sensation as well.

How can you make that burning sensation go away?

Washing hair too frequently can dry out hair, leading to an itchy scalp. One way to lessen the pain is to reduce the amount of times you wash your hair. Oils for African-American hair is a treasure—a recommended once a week, or once every two weeks, shampoo is plenty.

Consistently moisturizing the scalp is a must, especially for braid or weave wearers. Find a good nozzle that can be used to get a moisturizing hair cream down to the root of your scalp. An oil sheen spray with a stick nozzle helps you reach into those tiny cracks and corners of your scalp that need the most juice.

Let your tresses hang free. Capping it down, wrapping it up, tying it up with a scarf—you name it, there are several moments throughout the day that we seek to protect our hair. Protection is a great thing, but sometimes all your scalp might need is some breathing room. If you find yourself in a raging itch battle in the middle of the night, try sleeping with your hair bonnet off – the air will help smoothe the scalp and reduce the pain.

If you do suffer from dandruff, continue to use your anti-dandruff shampoo. If you have a severe case of an itch, one that results in pus forming bumps on the head, please take your scalp to a health professional to have the problem addressed.

Featured Article From Coca & Creme

Beyonce Knowles

Whether you wear a weave to add fullness to your natural mane, as a protective style, or to simply change up your look—here’s what every weave-wearing woman should live by.

1. Thou shall blend. There’s nothing worse than a weave with conflicting textures. If you’re unable to manipulate your true texture to mimic that of your weave, then you should get a weave that replicates your true strands.

2. Thou shall not let thy tracks be visible. You might as well leave the house with a pack of Remy 1B 14-inch in your hand. If you’re unable to properly conceal your weave, just skip it all together.

3. Thou shall have thy tracks sewn on securely. Over time, tracks will loosen as you style your weave. But there’s no reason for them to be hanging on for dear life by a single strand of weaving thread after one week of wear.

4. Thou shall not leave the salon in discomfort. I’ve witnessed too many women leaving the salon with a headache because their tracks were sewn on too tight. Not only is it painful, but it also puts you at risk of traction alopecia.

5. Thou shall not wear a shiny weave. A quality weave will have a natural luster to it. There is no need to weigh it down with tons of product. This will only make it look fake. The more lightness and bounce your weave has, the more authentic it will look and feel.

6. Thou shall use the proper products for maintenance. Each weave has different needs. A curly weave might require a leave-in conditioner to reduce frizz, while a straight one might call for a lightweight moisturizer, or nothing at all. It varies, so do your research.

7. Thou shall care for thy weave as if it were thy real hair. Maximize the life of your weave by properly protecting it at night, avoiding over-processing with heat, and cleansing it regularly. Consult your hairstylist about how often you should shampoo and condition your extensions.

8. Thou shall protect thy edges and scalp. We’ve all seen the photos of Naomi floating around the web. Ladies, this doesn’t have to be your fate! Massage an oil, such as olive or jojoba oil, infused with a stimulating herb, like rosemary, along your edges, nape, and scalp, to prevent breakage.

9. Thou shall not wear a weave beyond its expiration date. It’s recommended that you keep your extensions in for 6 to 8 weeks. Any longer than that can lead to matting (of your actual hair) and result in hair loss.

10. Thou shall not become attached to thy weave. We’re not talking about having a styling preference. We’re talking about feeling that you need a weave to be attractive. At the end of the day, beauty exudes from the inside. Your weave should be an accessory not a mask for your insecurity.

Featured Article From Coco & Creme

I went “natural” the summer before my senior year of high school. I remember falling deeply in love with the foreign mix of textures that inhabited my head. Ever since, I’ve rocked everything from a twa (teeny weeny afro) to twists to locs. I eventually grew bored and chopped off my brastrap-grazing strands. Three months later, I grew restless again and installed kinky twists. A month after that I sported a kinky weave. Four months later, a straight one. The summer after, a looser curl was intricately sewn to my strands and I’ve stuck with that look ever since. I loved the versatility of weaves. Plus, my real mane was growing like wildfire. The protective style, in addition to my hairstylist’s gentle touch, optimized its growth. But I loved natural hair just as much. My adoration of others’ kinks and curls, and years of rocking my own were proof, right?

Wrong. After two years of chronic weaving, I realized that denial is a bitch. I used every excuse in the book. I was giving my naps a “break.” I was letting them “grow out.” I was just enjoying “changing it up.” I was secure enough with my “Blackness” to rock a weave. I didn’t need an afro to be a testament to my Black pride. But when I faced the fact that just the thought of going weave-less damn near gave me a panic attack, it became apparent that I’d become just as addicted to weaves as I was to the “creamy crack.”

A weave is safe. You look at the picture on the package, or the pattern of the curl, and you know more or less what to expect when you attach it to your head. There are seldom any surprises. And if there are, you can remove it and try another brand or texture. But the defiant strands on your head? They’re here to stay. Sure, you can manipulate them with products and heat, but you got to learn the way of the fro. With the number of blogs and online resources for natural hair care, it should be a breeze. But what might work for one natural might not work for you. However, what works for one wearer of the same weave will work for yours. Getting reacquainted with my natural hair again is daunting. It’s scary because it’s unfamiliar. It’s scary because I’ve become a newbie all over again.

I’m just one of many naturals who perpetually weave their hair as a way to “deal” with it. We’ve just managed to wrap all our fears and insecurities into the tightly cornrowed kinky strands under our weaves. We’re right beside the naturals who continually flat-iron their manes because .

“Naturaldom” is not a destination, but a never-ending journey. It’s not somewhere you simply arrive when you do the “Big Chop” and then call it quits. While you love and nurture your kinks and curls, you have to love and nurture that mentality that got you there. We’re bombarded subconsciously and consciously everyday with so many messages that tell us not to embrace who we are. We have to actively counter them. I’ve momentarily veered off the path, now I’m ready to get back on it.

Who’s coming with me?

Featured Article From AOL BlackVoices

Before ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star NeNe Leakes recently broke her weave addiction and began sporting a natural short ‘do, she turned to Atlanta celebrity hairstylist Derek J to create a similar look using a weave.

Nene Leaks of Bravo's RHOA

“She had another stylist for the third season to create her new short coif,” says Derek J. , who styled NeNe’s hair for the series first reunion show and throughout its second season. Derek J, owner of The J. Spot Salon, also took R&B singer Tweet to shorter lengths using the same weaving technique.

Since Leakes’ debuted the short-weaved look years ago, more women have requested similar styling that would allow them to don a spiky pixie cut — like his clients Nicole Ari Parker and Terri J. Vaughn — without sacrificing their long tresses. This is one of the reasons for the faux cut’s popularity.

The weave’s color, how it’s cut and styling are key to successfully pulling this look off, Derek J says. “The cut is really big because you want it to lay and flow like natural hair,” he stresses.

The short-weaved style is commonly referred to as a quick weave or 27 piece, taken from the name of multi-length 27-piece human hair wefts such as those offered from Milky Way’s ShortCut series. Although Derek J gave Leakes a sew-in, he prefers to design the look by gluing wefts of hair to a stocking cap, essentially creating a wig and more flexibility for the client.

He starts by braiding the client’s hair and then covering it with black hair wrap strips that protect the hair from weave bonding glue. Next he puts a stocking cap over the head, which provides “a blank canvas to lay weft tracks on,” he explains.
He then adds pieces from the 27-piece human hair weave set, forgoing shorter pieces for medium lengths so they can “lay nicely along the neck.” He attaches the hair with weave bonding glue.

“I add longer ones on the sides to fit the hairline so it can nicely fit the face,” he says, pointing out that he uses longer, 12-inch straight wefts toward the top portion of the hair. Adding longer pieces on top allows him more versatility in styling. So if he wanted to cut the hair in an eye-covering side-swoop style Kelly Rowland sported today when she attended ASCAP’s “Women Behind the Music” event in Atlanta, there’s enough hair to do so. Although he’s seen the look done with synthetic hair, he prefers to use human hair because it can be styled with heating tools.

In all it takes about 90 minutes to create the look from start to finish. “It’s like a custom wig once it’s done,” says Derek J.

The Ohio native suggests using darker hair versus lighter hair because “the lighter you go the more plastic it looks,” he warns. If you can’t live without color, he suggests using darker hair around the edges and back of the head and going lighter on top. “But people don’t get it,” Derek J says, explaining that, “with lighter hair you’re taking a risk at looking wiggish.”

He also cautions against using too much hair oil and other products that could interfere with the hair’s fluidity, making it look hard and very stiff. “Even with short hair you still want a lot of movement,” says Derek J, suggesting keeping the look no longer than a month. “If you need to wash it, see your hairstylist instead of doing it yourself because it is glued to a stocking cap and could fall apart.”

Although there are 27 piece do-it-yourself videos on YouTube, Derek J says the style shouldn’t be done without a professional because it’s too tedious to do it right. “Anybody can do anything at home, but how it looks at the end is a different story,” Derek J says.

Derek J recently served as a judge on the Oxygen Network’s hair competition show “Hair Battle Spectacular” and was featured in Chris Rock’s 2009 documentary “Good Hair.”

Naomi Campbell has made a lot of money on her looks. It’s not surprising that onlookers gasped and swoon when the supermodel pulled her hair back to reveal a severe bald patch. In the neighborhood, we would say she got caught slipping. She has been rockin’ weaves for decades, so it’s not like her luxurious hair has fallen out or been pulled out. We’re not sure why folks are so caught up in what’s happening on her head, as opposed to what’s in it. Even bald, she’s still better looking than most people on a good day.
